How observations are coded, how those codes drive the overall assessment, and which certificate or report is the correct document for the work.

EICR classification codes

C1 — Danger present, risk of injury, immediate remedial action required. C2 — Potentially dangerous, urgent remedial action required. C3 — Improvement recommended (advisory). FI — Further investigation is advised (advisory).

Overall assessment rule

The overall assessment is unsatisfactory ONLY where a C1 or C2 is recorded. C3 and FI are advisory and do not affect the overall assessment, though they should be given due consideration.

Choosing EIC, EICR or MEIWC

EIC (Reg 644.1) — a new installation, or an addition/alteration that includes replacement of a distribution board or consumer unit. MEIWC (Reg 644.4.201) — an addition/alteration to an existing circuit that does NOT include a new circuit or board/CU replacement. EICR (Reg 653.1) — periodic inspection of an existing installation.
